Permanent information, in the field of tourism like the rest. Not sure of always following or not missing these important things that might occasionally interest us. This is why we invite you every day to revisit a news story that came out recently in order to (re)highlight it a little.

A need for standardization and the end of supplements

It’s sometimes a real headache. Already to know what we must – or can – put there, then how to fit everything in there, until the final question, generally at the time of check-in at the airport, which is to know if ultimately the size of the cabin baggage you want to take with you on board is the right size. And in case of doubt or concern, how much will the extra cost be?

But all this might soon be a thing of the past…

Indeed, the European Commission is recently interested in air travel and passengers. Stories of supplements for choosing a seat, skipping the line, and above all the cabin baggage policy put in place by the companies.
The goal on this last point: that there is at least harmonization between carriers at the level of European flights and that what we call “hidden costs” are effectively reduced for the passenger; these additional costs which can quickly escalate and ultimately sometimes exceed the price of the ticket alone.

Because you should know that from one company to another, both regular and low cost, the sizes if not the weight or the type of baggage authorized in the cabin can vary. But with the common point that in all cases, if it exceeds, we pay.
This is how currently, to cite just a few examples, the following are authorized on board at no extra cost:

Air France: baggage measuring 55 x 35 x 25 cm (12 kg maximum) + small bag measuring 40 x 30 x 15 cm. easyJet: luggage measuring 56 x 45 x 25 cm (15 kg maximum) + small bag measuring 45 x 36 x 20 cm. Ryanair: luggage measuring 55 x 40 x 20 cm (10 kg maximum) + small bag measuring 40 x 25 x 20 cm. Volotea: luggage of 55 x 40 x 20 (10 kg maximum) + small bag of 40 x 30 x 20 cm.

In short, many in the EU would now like airlines to offer single dimensions and no longer charge extra for hand luggage. provided that they meet reasonable requirements in terms of weight and dimensions, and comply with applicable safety requirements ».

Good resolutions certainly but which, legally, might not be binding on the companies. To be continued…
