The entity has explained on several occasions that Colombia is a very seismically active country due to the interaction of tectonic plates on the coasts and around the mountain ranges. This situation means that on average around 80 earthquakes per day can occur in the country, although most are practically imperceptible to people.

In addition, almost 2,500 tremors can occur per month, three per hour.

How to act in an earthquake?

The SGC recommends that the best thing in this type of case is to remain calm. “This will allow us to act with greater security. The first thing to do is seek protection. If you are in an earthquake-resistant construction, position yourself near the columns, under a desk or in areas marked as safe, always away from glass or elements that may fall,” the entity noted.

If you are at home, and only if possible, open the main and bedroom doors, because they might get stuck and lock you and your family in. If you are outside, observe your surroundings and find a safe place. Try to stay away from poles and wires. Stay away from the facades, as parts of them may fall, such as bricks or glass; With caution, head to the center of the street and be careful with vehicles, it is very possible that the drivers did not feel the earthquake. If you are driving a vehicle on the streets of a city or municipality and notice an earthquake, reduce your speed.

Furthermore, many people have the idea of staying still and waiting for the shaking to end, which is also a bad idea since you cannot predict how long it will last and how strong it will be.
