Statistical rise in femicides in Venezuela

From January to April 2024, 58 femicides have been formally recorded in the country, according to the quarterly report of the Digital Observatory of Femicides of the Center for Justice and Peace (Cepaz), which highlighted that there was an average of one woman dying in violent incidents every 33 hours.

In its report, the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) detailed that between January 1 and April 30, 2024, a woman was murdered every 33 hours in the country. According to Cepaz, this situation resulted in approximately 30 children and adolescents being orphaned, while one child, in addition to being orphaned, witnessed the violent death of his mother.

The Cepaz board of directors explained that among the regions where there was a higher incidence of completed femicides, Miranda state occupies first place with 9 cases; Zulia is in second place with 8, while in the Capital District, 7 homicides occurred. Regarding attempted femicides, the states with the highest number of cases were: Zulia, 5; Capital District, Monagas, Carabobo, Bolívar and Barinas, 3 cases in each; and Táchira, 2 cases.

In this report, the NGO states that 15.5% were girls under 11 years of age and 13.8% were under 5 years of age. Twelve percent were adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age. In 32.7% of the cases, victims were between 31 and 54 years of age.

According to the observatory, two of the victims of completed femicide and one of frustrated femicide were active police officers. In 12.1% of completed femicides, women were involved as co-authors or accomplices of these acts.
