Statement: Russia, China to strengthen banking channels, financial settlement system between them

This came according to a joint statement issued by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang following the 29th regular meeting of the heads of government of the two countries.

The statement said, “Moscow and Beijing agreed to strengthen and develop the payment and settlement infrastructure, including by opening bank accounts and branches in order to ensure the smooth operation of trade settlement channels between the two countries.”

Moscow and Beijing also plan to strengthen cooperation in international institutions to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, and to develop dialogue in the field of information technology, including software issues.

The statement stressed the support of the two countries’ governments to increase mutual investment and work to establish a register of regional investment projects.

Russia and China have strategic relations, especially in the energy sector, and both countries are members of regional organizations such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Western countries are trying, through the sanctions imposed on Moscow, to hinder economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. Therefore, the heads of government of the two countries agreed on steps to remove obstacles to trade settlements.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko announced that trade exchange between Russia and China increased by 4.8% in the first half of this year, reaching $113 billion.
