State youth officers want regulation of nicotine pouches

The Salzburg youth officer sees a ban on selling to people under the age of 18 as a goal.

For the nicotine pouches, which are popular with young people, there should be regulations on sales to young people under the age of 18. That is one of the wishes that the state youth officers formulated at a joint conference with State Secretary Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) on Friday in Salzburg to the federal government.

“The problem is that there are currently no regulations for the sale of these tobacco pouches to children and young people,” said Salzburg’s youth officer LHStv. Marlene Svazek (FPÖ). Like her colleagues, she would like a nationwide restriction. Until these exist, Salzburg will go ahead and work out its own regulation. Svazek thinks a ban up to the age of 18 makes sense. “The older you get, the less risk there is of starting these things,” believes the politician.

More attention to the digital challenges and those of artificial intelligence in school and vocational training were further concerns of the youth officers. The federal states would like to get involved in these challenges, said Svazek. Another topic was dealing with knockout drops. More awareness and preventive measures are needed, explained Plakolm. You have to create awareness that this danger can affect anyone. “It’s better to throw away a drink if you haven’t looked after your glass for a moment,” advised the state secretary, who emphasized that the protection of minors is in good hands with the federal states.
