Bern-Wabern, 09.18.2023 – During the month of August 2023, 3,001 asylum applications were submitted in Switzerland, i.e. 832 more than in July (+ 38.4%). Compared to August 2022, this number is up by 955 units. The applicants mainly came from Türkiye and Afghanistan. In addition, during the month under review, protection status S was granted to 1966 people who fled Ukraine and ended in 1821 cases.

The main countries of origin of people who submitted an asylum application in Switzerland in August were Turkey with 777 applications (224 more than in July), Afghanistan (737 applications; +259), Eritrea (233 requests; +69), Syria (165 requests; +62) and Algeria (152 requests; +11).

Of the 3,001 requests presented during the month under review, 2,454 were primary requests (compared to 1,818 in July 2023), that is to say requests presented independently of other people who had already requested protection. People who made such a request in August 2023 mainly came from Turkey (642 requests, +187), Afghanistan (636 requests, +191), Algeria (149 requests, +10), Morocco (111 requests , +17) and Syria (110 requests, +31). Secondary applications, for their part, follow asylum applications already registered (in the context, for example, of births, family reunifications or multiple applications).

Asylum applications settled at first instance

During the month of August 2023, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) processed 2,262 asylum applications. Among them, 595 resulted in a decision not to pursue the matter (including 517 on the basis of the Dublin agreement), 621 in the granting of asylum and 447 in provisional admission granted at first instance. The number of pending cases at first instance stands at 13,645, 819 more than in July.

Departures

Also in August, 1,425 people left Switzerland under the control of the authorities or were returned to their country of origin or to a third country. Switzerland has asked other Dublin States to take charge of 1,167 applicants. At the same time, 188 people were transferred to Dublin State, which is responsible for processing their asylum applications. Switzerland, for its part, received 312 requests for support from other Dublin States, and 75 people were transferred to its territory.

Ukraine: protection status S (special procedure)

In August 2023, 2286 people from Ukraine applied for protection status S. During the same period, this status was granted to 1966 people, refused to 75 others who did not meet the criteria and lifted in 1821 cases , on the grounds that the persons concerned had left Switzerland. Overall, since the activation of S status, it has already ended for 15,910 people and the end of the status is being examined for 4,168 others. At the end of August, 65,406 people benefited from S status.
