State of Play: Really disappointing PS4 and PS5 announcements?

Game News State of Play: Really disappointing PS4 and PS5 announcements?

He came, we saw, but the latest State of Play didn’t really convince. After the release of Gran Turismo 7 and while the next God of War is still awaited, PS4 and PS5 players expected a busy schedule with new announcements as a bonus. But it was rather disappointment that was felt. So, a really disappointing edition? Here is our analysis.

After the State of Play on Wednesday evening, it must be admitted, it was above all “grimace soup” on the side of the players. Globally, the menu prepared by PlayStation did not appeal. “I have more and more trouble with digital events of 15-20 min. I do not understand the usefulness” written for example in a message on Twitter Christopher Klippel, journalist and head of the video games section of the Presse Citron media. “And the communication slammed (…) to finally announce that a free update. We didn’t expect anything, but wow”. On the famous social network, he is not the only one to express his dissatisfaction. “Thank you very much (PlayStation – editor’s note) for making me lose 20 minutes of my life” affirms a second user. After the recent postponement of Forspoken from May to October 2022, the March to December period is currently relatively empty on the PlayStation exclusives side. Ghostwire Tokyo will arrive in a few days, following which it’s a blur. A fog that we would have liked to see dissipated.

Big expectations

Sony’s communication however foreshadowed some nice surprises, with “upcoming titles from some of our favorite Japanese publishers” and “announcements from developers around the world”, to use the words of the company. What bet on titles like Final Fantasy XVIon the side of the Japanese publisher Square Enix, which has not given any news since its announcement at the PlayStation Showcase in September 2021. Or to present the remaster or even the sequel to Bloodborne – FromSoftware (Elden Ring) – that rumors have been talking regarding for months now. Some also thought to hold the date of God of War Ragnarokstill scheduled for 2022. But none of those wishes were fulfilled. Instead, the players notably had the right to Exoprimala brand new shooter from Capcom, to a multiplayer DLC for Returnal and upon return of the license Valkyrie in the form of an action-RPG.

Format d’appoint

Even if the State of Play has already reserved some excellent surprises for us (notably the return of Final Fantasy VII Remake following months of absence in May 2019) Sony seems more and more to want to make this format an “add-on” format. In other words, another way to rekindle the enthusiasm for it, on the sidelines of other communication highlights, such as the presentation of a new accessory – the PSVR 2 in January and February last -, a buyout of studio, with that of Bungie there is little, even a more important announcement: for the PC version of the reboot of God of War, it was via a simple press release. As for the major statements by the manufacturer, they are now embodied by the PlayStation Showcase. It was during its last edition, in September 2021, that we learned of the existence of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine, both of which will be released in 2023 as PS5 exclusives – barring a surprise PS4 release. Without forgetting the announcement of the remake of Star Wars : KOTOR and the first gameplay trailer for the sequel to God of War.

It is clear that we will probably have to wait for the next PlayStation Showcase to have other “worthy of the name” surprises, a format whose favorite month seems to be September. But the communication time of June-July-August is not to be neglected, even though Sony no longer participates in E3. The company took advantage of the Summer Game Fest 2021 to announce the new release date ofHorizon Forbidden West. Another point to keep in mind, the State of Play dedicated to a single game, as for Grand Touring 7 recently. A scenario that might happen once more for the next God of War. However, hard to contain his excitement at each classic edition of the State of Play, which remains a format where “anything can happen” (especially given the turns of phrase of PlayStation to announce these events). The penultimate show seemed more inspired, with Star Ocean, Bugsnax and Little Devil Inside. This is only a postponement.
