This Friday on the Platform program, university professor Vicente Cuchillas spoke regarding the work reality of journalists in the country, where he indicated that 77.8% of journalists say they have identification, but the rest do not have it for security reasons.
Regarding internet connection, 64% state that they are given this access, the rest do not, these data give insight into the work reality. On the other hand, he highlighted that El Salvador stands out in the issue of self-censorship of journalists due to the fear of attacks or legal sanctions from state entities, and that 77.8% consider that threats are common, this when covering issues of corruption.
“It must be analyzed whether they are public media or the voice of the government, a negative aspect for more than 65% of journalists, who they consider limits press freedom. In El Salvador, the legal restrictions in the reforms of the penal code stand out.”
Cuchillas indicated that the media do not have an editorial line independent of the government, and that in El Salvador there is only government media outlets and not a public media outlet.
“Violence in our country once morest female journalists is carried out in a differentiated way by State institutions. President Nayib Bukele makes them uncomfortable because of the journalists’ auditing of society. El Salvador seems to be the best example of the negative treatment of journalists by the State, sources, media, a recommendation is to protect public media and provide security to journalists,” he highlighted.
