State Department wants Xi to encourage Russia to end conflict with Ukraine during visit

The Joe Biden administration would like China to use its influence with Russia to end hostilities in Ukraine, State Department spokesman Ned Price said. So he answered the question of what Washington expects from the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russia.

“There are countries in the world that maintain such relations with Russia that we do not maintain. China is at the top of this list in terms of relations with Russia and leverage over it. We would like countries around the world to use these relationships and leverage to help convince the Russian Federation to end this brutal war,” Mr. Price told reporters. His words are given on the website of the State Department.

The Wall Street Journal the day before, March 13, reported that Xi Jinping intends to visit Moscow next week and meet with Vladimir Putin. After that, he can negotiate via video link with Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the interlocutors of the publication, Xi Jinping, in addition to a visit to Russia, is also going to visit a number of European countries, although “the full route of the trip has not been confirmed.”
