At the end of February, AVTOVAZ announced the release of the first batch of Lada Vesta cars with a continuously variable transmission. The start of sales of such cars is scheduled only for March 11, but shipments to dealers have already begun today and some details have emerged. Vesta got a Chinese V-belt variator WanLiYang (WLY) CVT18, familiar from younger models of Chery (for example, Tiggo 4 with a basic aspirated engine). It has seven fixed virtual gears, and especially for Vesta, the variator was prepared not only with an original control program, but also with new mounts.

If the previous Jatco CVT was installed on Vesta only in conjunction with the Nissan HR16 engine (113 hp), then the Chinese transmission is combined with a VAZ engine – this is the recently modernized naturally aspirated 1.8 Evo with a power of 122 hp. The new variator is designed to transmit torque up to 180 Nm, which is sufficient to work with the VAZ engine, which develops up to 170 Nm. Before the start of mass production, AVTOVAZ produced more than 50 Vest prototypes with a CVT to undergo a full range of tests.

So far, only the starting price of Vesta with a CVT has been announced. A two-pedal sedan in the basic Comfort configuration (two airbags, ABS, air conditioning, steel wheels) will cost 1 million 589 thousand rubles. This is 75 thousand more than they are asking for a similar Vesta with a 1.6 engine (106 hp) and a five-speed manual transmission. CVTs will be installed on all varieties of Vesta, including station wagon, cross-station wagon and cross-sedan. However, the full price list will be published later.
