Starmer’s stark warning to Brits: Budget painful – First getting worse, then better

“A budget is coming in October and it will be painful. We have no other choice, given the situation we are in,” he added.

Starmer stressed that it will take time for Britain to rebuild and get rid of the rot that he said prevailed under the previous Conservative government, while warning that “things are going to get worse before they get better.”

Starmer, who won a landslide election victory in July, has vowed to restore the fabric of British society, saying this month’s anti-immigrant riots reflected the divisions created during his 14 years in power. Conservative Party.

The prime minister delivered his speech in the Downing Street garden, where former prime minister Boris Johnson had held one of his many parties during the Covid-19 lockdowns, which Starmer said had destroyed public confidence in his politicians.

“We have inherited, not only an economic black hole, but a societal black hole and that is why we have to take action and do things differently. Part of that is being honest with people about the options we have and how tough this is going to be,” he said.

“Honestly, things are going to get worse before they get better,” he added.

Addressing an audience of people he had met on the campaign trail this year, including interns, teachers, nurses and small business owners, Starmer stressed that change would not happen overnight.

But speaking a week before Britain’s parliament reconvenes after the summer break, he said his government was determined to tackle a host of problems ranging from prison overcrowding to homelessness and long health care waiting lists.

Mr Starmer said the Conservative government’s failure to tackle the problems and its focus on the “unfairness” of populism had widened fissures in society, divisions that would take time to heal.
