SpaceX’s internet connectivity service, Starlink, is seeing a meteoric rollout across the globe. What was once an ambitious project is now a tangible reality for many users. And the good news is that the Starlink kit is now available at a very attractive price on the Fnac website and at Darty.
As a reminder, Starlink is a company created by billionaire Elon Musk, who is also the head of the commercial aerospace company SpaceX. Starlink’s mission is to provide very high-speed Internet access to all corners of the world, including the most remote regions, using a network of thousands of satellites in orbit around the Earth.
In France, the target of this service is in particular those who do not have access to very high speed, such as fiber optics, and who require a more efficient connection than that offered by ADSL. With the growing popularity of video-on-demand (SVoD) streaming services and the intensive use of the Internet for leisure and home business purposes, ADSL is often insufficient.
Unlike conventional geostationary satellites which are typically at an altitude of 35,700 km, Starlink’s satellites operate in what is known as Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which significantly reduces latency times. The closer they are to Earth, the faster they are able to transport large amounts of data to any point on the globe. This is where the audacity of Elon Musk is noticeable: he did not hesitate to launch thousands of satellites to create a truly global network.
what you need
To connect to this network, the user needsa Starlink kit which consists of a dish, a tripod to stabilize this antenna, and a router for data processing and connection sharing. The usual cost of this kit is 450 euros.
In addition to the cost of the material, there is also a monthly subscription of 50 euros for individuals. What is offered in exchange is 50 to 500 Mbit/s downstream speed and 20 to 40 ms latency, without limitation of data consumption. These performances vary according to the number of satellites deployed and the quality of the environment.
Available at Fnac and at Darty
The big news is that the Starlink kit is now available at Fnac and at Darty, at a very attractive price. The kit is on pre-order at 199.99 euros, a saving of 250 euros compared to its usual price. Delivery is scheduled for July 17. Additionally, using code FNAC30 on Fnac or PROMO15 at Dartyyou get an additional credit of 30 euros and 15 euros respectively.
It is clear that Starlink represents an attractive alternative to ADSL, but also to optical fiber for those who cannot benefit from it. Thanks to these new offers, access to very high speed Internet is becoming more and more affordable.
