After the controversy of Alan Wake II, following the absence of a physical version, it’s Bethesda’s turn with their next Starfield game to encounter the same problem. A tweet posted by publisher support, on Twitter, suggested that the title might not have a disc and be digital only. Here is the message, now deleted:

Simple error or reality?

Fans were hoping that deleting the tweet would suggest an error, but so far Bethesda’s support account (@BethesdaSupport on Twitter), hasn’t given any further details.. Earlier this month, Bethesda’s Spanish Twitter account revealed that: “It depends on the edition. For example, the standard edition has a disc, while the ‘Constellation’ edition has a code engraved on a disc. collector’s item, which you can see in the picture.”

Until proven otherwise, you must therefore follow the instructions of the Spanish account: it depends on the version. The other hypothesis would be that Bethesda has revised its plans for the physical version of their next title. Starfield is expected to be Bethesda’s most ambitious game yet, a space exploration RPG with over 1,000 planets to discover. Although only 10% of planets have any form of life, Todd Howard pointed out that almost every planet is more or less unique. Each of them should have its temperature, a different level of radiation, meteorological effects or even a particular gravity. The game is scheduled for release on September 6, 2023 on PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, and will be available on launch day on Xbox Game Pass.
