Stardom to Scandal: The Meteoric Rise and Crash of a Beloved Icon

Stardom to Scandal: The Meteoric Rise and Crash of a Beloved Icon

After a heated debate at Wednesday’s budget adoption in Hjørring City Council, chairman of the Social, Elderly and Disability Committee, Claus Højrup (V) has chosen to resign from the post.

This happens after the politicians have just been briefed on more and more fundamental problems with the culture and operation of the institution, which houses 48 residents and employs approximately 130 employees.

– It is a fact that we politicians have long been misinformed by the administration about the systematic failure that has happened out there.

– Although I believe that we acted from a political point of view when we finally got the information, I am also accused of a lack of action, and therefore I now take the consequence, says Claus Højrup (V).

Nordjyske has told in several articles since the turn of the year about employee flight, major frustrations among relatives about the management, and that for many of the residents it has been pure storage for a long time.

The problems in the institution’s shielded section in particular have shaken the politicians, with e.g. a resident who has to live behind a locked door due to fear of a very outgoing neighbor.

– These are some appalling conditions that we have now become aware of and which must be rectified, but I have come to the conclusion that it is best that some fresh eyes come on, says Claus Højrup.

But don’t you also have overall responsibility for the process?

– I believe that from a political point of view we have acted responsibly when we have received the information, but the problem has been that the administration has told us all along that everything was fine, and that has not been true, says Claus Højrup.

However, several relatives of residents have tried to call out the politicians over the past two years.

– I have had a few inquiries about it, but also others who have said that it went well. When there were systematic reports of objectionable conditions in January, we started investigations, says Claus Højrup, who describes it as sad and unfortunate that he has to leave an area that he has worked with and been passionate about for seven years.

In August, the manager of Aage Holms Vej quit, and an area manager was fired. This happened after a very critical report came from the Social Security Administration.

Now the municipality’s disability manager has also resigned.

A so-called crisis management system has been put in place and the entire operation of the institution must be thoroughly investigated.

The left in Hjørring City Council has decided that Claus Højrup will change places with colleague Lone Olsen, who will become the new chairman of the SÆH committee, and Claus Højrup will instead become deputy chairman of the Children, Leisure and Education Committee.

The reshuffle will only come into effect at the beginning of November.
