Melbourne: Melbourne Archbishop Peter A Comenzoli has called on the church leaders to stand with the Jewish community and not allow anti-Semitic sentiments in Australia. In a letter sent to all Catholic churches under the Diocese of Melbourne, Archbishop Comenzoli expressed a strong stand once morest anti-Semitic sentiment.
The archbishop condemned yesterday’s pro-Palestinian-Israeli clashes in Caulfield, where many people of the Jewish faith live in Melbourne. Archbishop Comenzoli is one of Australia’s leading faith and cultural leaders in public support for Victoria’s Jewish community.
“The anti-Semitism that is evident in some parts of Australia, particularly on university campuses and on the streets, in social media, and even among some who claim to be Christians, is shocking and deeply hurtful,” he said.
‘These events are the result of people’s hidden ignorance and unbelief regarding the Jewish tradition. Deliberately inciting hatred and spreading dishonest agendas’.
Archbishop Comenzoli said the tragic events in Israel and Gaza do not justify anti-Semitism. “The language of hatred and hatred is the language that comes from a poisonous spirit,” he added.
Hindu Council of Australia chairman Makarand Bhagwat and Indian community leader Jai Shah condemned anti-Semitism and expressed solidarity with the Jewish community.
Rabbi Yaakov Glassman, president of the Rabbinical Association of Australia, has thanked Victoria Premier Jacinta Allen for her support during this extraordinarily challenging time. Yaakov Glassman thanked the Premier for his strong and mature stance and call for peaceful demonstrations, adding that violence and hate speech have no place in the state of Victoria.
