Stand-up performances are multiplying far from the capital. Confirmed or amateurs, more and more of them are taking to the boards in Marseille.
A small room, the public almost in contact with the artist, the stand-up shows are regularly packed in Marseille. Especially when it’s a very prominent comedian from the Parisian scene who is passing through. Punchlines that hit the mark. A good dose of improvisation. The public asks for more. “We came, as a family, to be able to laugh with the artist, we know that there will be interaction with the public,” rejoices a spectator.
Having become a staple of the genre, Tareek has seen the recipe for stand-up evolve since he was spotted by the Jamel Comedy Club, more than 10 years ago. “There were wigs and accessories, we didn’t talk to people, remembers the comedian. Today the techniques are no longer the same.”
These intimate scenes are all the rage. The Garage Comedy Club opened its doors three years ago, offering stand-up classes. Budding comedians are tempted like Véra, who embarked on the adventure a year ago. She remembers her first scene. “Stomach ache, stressed, I’m writing my first text and everyone is super friendly, it’s going very well, it’s a shot, we take a first dose and following that, we can’t stop”confides Véra Penuela.
The rise of open stages is arousing vocations. “It’s thanks to places like this that artists can develop. We went from 10 when I started in Marseille 5 years ago, to more than 400 stand-uppers, all levels combined”explains Quentin Friburger, a rising star of humor.
This year, the comedian was welcomed to Switzerland at Montreux Comedy Festival. A great recognition for this young artist. A first for Marseille.
