It is the Ukrainian game developers GSC Game World who are behind the new video game “Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl”. The game is a sequel to the acclaimed game from 2007.
The plan was for the release of the game to take place as early as 2012, but was canceled already that year. Only in 2018 did the development of the game pick up again and the plan was for it to be released in December 2022.
However, everything ended up on pause again and this time for events outside the world of video games. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine put an end to the development of the game.
Many left Ukraine
The company and the majority of the employees managed to get to Prague to continue the work on developing the new game. At the same time, some chose to remain in Ukraine, some joined the army and others stayed behind to help people on the ground.
– The war affected our life, but not the creative process, GSC Game World CEO Ievgen Grygorovych told news agency AFP.
In October, the documentary was released ”War Game: The Making of Stalker” which followed the game company and the employees’ stories about what it was like to develop a war game in the middle of a war.
To the newspaper Variety told Maria Grygorovych, who is in charge of creative at GSC Game World, about how scary it was to agree to make the documentary.
– It wasn’t my dream to make this film, but I really think it’s important to share this. When the opportunity came, we thought it was important to show the world a little more about how difficult it is to live in a time of war from a personal perspective, Grygorovych told the newspaper.
Set in a post-apocalyptic spirit
The game “Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl” takes place in a post-apocalyptic future in Chernobyl where the player gets to explore the dangerous place “The Zone” and make decisions that affect the story.
The game is released in Sweden at 15:00 on November 20 and can be played on both PC and Xbox.

Well, well, well! It seems that while the world has been busy battling it out across various actual warzones, something equally explosive has been brewing in the world of video games. The universe has conspired to finally unleash “Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl,” a sequel so long-awaited that it might as well have been in therapy for a decade. If you’re anything like me, you’ve certainly been getting those “Hurry up and take my money!” vibes every time the game’s name pops up. But let’s dive deeper, shall we? Grab your gas masks, it’s about to get edgy!
When Life Imitates Art — Oops!
Originally scheduled for a 2012 debut, “Stalker 2” hit more bumps than a poorly paved road! The game developers over at GSC Game World must have been praying to the gaming gods that their beloved title wouldn’t become vaporware status—no pressure, right? But then, as if life wasn’t already trying to throw a curveball, Russia decided to invade Ukraine, and everything went into a death spiral that had more twists than a plot from a daytime soap opera.
War? What War? Oh, That War!
Despite the literal bombs dropping outside, GSC managed to relocate most of their operations to Prague—making them the most determined evaders of conflict since every final boss ever created. Some employees stayed behind, presumably channeling their inner superheroes by joining the fight or helping out those in need. GSC Game World CEO Ievgen Grygorovych even exclaimed, “The war affected our life, but not the creative process.” Isn’t that the spirit? Talk about dedication! If only my motivation for writing could be that strong when I run out of coffee!
A Documentary to Remember
And now for a juicy twist: October saw the release of a documentary titled “War Game: The Making of Stalker,” providing a window into the madness of developing a game in a literal war zone. Imagine pitching that film to your friends: “What’s it about?” “Oh, just a bunch of game developers trying not to die while making a video game!” It’s like “The Office” but with less awkward pauses and more explosions.
The Game Itself: Post-Apocalyptic Awesomeness!
So, what’s all the fuss about? Well, “Stalker 2” is set in a post-apocalyptic Chernobyl, where players will roam “The Zone,” facing dangers that’d make even the bravest among us wonder whether we should have just stayed home binge-watching cat videos. With your decisions impacting the story, it’s not just a game; it’s a philosophical pondering on free will and, you guessed it, survival—a worthy theme considering the recent backdrop of chaos!
