Photo = Clipart Korea Climbing stairs is a representative exercise that can be easily performed in everyday life. Even if you don’t make time to exercise, you can see effects such as improving cardiorespiratory endurance and strengthening lower body muscles just by climbing the stairs in your apartment or office. However, as with all exercise, you must be careful because climbing stairs without considering your physical condition can result in serious injury. In particular, it is best for elderly people with weak lower body strength, patients with knee arthritis, or heart disease patients with reduced cardiopulmonary function to avoid climbing stairs.
People with weak knee joints are at risk of developing arthritis when climbing stairs. This is because if you force yourself to climb stairs, force continues to be applied to already weakened joints. If your knees hurt even following climbing a few stairs, it is likely that your joint strength has weakened.
People with bad knee joints may experience ‘fallen back syndrome’ if they repeatedly engage in movements that put weight on their knees, such as climbing stairs. The wall of the knee is a thin membrane that moves along the front of the knee when the knee is bent and extended. If the pelvic wall becomes inflamed due to excessive exercise, its elasticity decreases and it becomes thicker, leading to pelvic wall syndrome. It is known that people who are born with thick and hard pelvic floor muscles and people who have led a sedentary lifestyle for a long time have a higher risk of developing lumbar pelvic syndrome.
It is not just patients with knee arthritis. Patients with heart disease, the elderly with a reduced sense of balance, and people who frequently suffer from anemia are also advised to refrain from climbing stairs. Climbing stairs forcibly with weakened heart function can put a strain on the heart, and if an elderly person with a reduced sense of balance loses leg strength while climbing stairs and falls, there is a risk of serious injury. Anemic patients may also suddenly become out of breath or lose their senses if they try too hard to climb stairs, causing them to fall.
Even healthy people must exercise according to their physical condition and physical ability to avoid injury. It is appropriate to be out of breath when climbing stairs, but still be able to have a conversation and sweat a little. If you are very out of breath or your thighs or calves hurt, take a break. After the break, walk on level ground for regarding 5 minutes and then climb the stairs once more. If you feel your leg weakness or severe pain while climbing the stairs, sit down, rest, ask for help, and then come down while holding on to the railing while accompanied by a guardian.
