Stage 9 at Puy de Dôme: Woods Narrowly Wins with Pogacar Gaining Momentum

2023-07-09 17:08:03

The 9th stage, with a terrible finish at the top of the Puy de Dôme, smiled on Michaël Woods. The Canadian narrowly won by catching American Matteo Jorgenson less than 450 meters from the finish line. For his part, Tadej Pogacar, who attacked 1.5km from the line, took 8 seconds from the yellow jersey Jonas Vingegaard to approach just 17 seconds from the Dane.

Woods won at the top of the Puy de Dôme 28 seconds ahead of Frenchman Pierre Latour and 35 over Slovenian Matej Mohoric, while the unfortunate Jorgenson finished 4th.

Far behind, more than 8 minutes from the winner, the favorites dithered for a long time. Tadej Pogacar attacked 1.5 km from the finish, but Jonas Vingegaard resisted for a moment before giving in in the last 500 meters.

Still, as already during the first arrival at the top, Pogacar managed to get Vingegaard off his wheel. He never got there last year.

Psychological advantage Pogacar

The gain obtained at Puy-de-Dôme, where the Tour returned for the first time in 35 years, is not spectacular in terms of time, but it is undoubtedly priceless on a psychological level, especially since the he stage was run in very hot weather and that Pogacar does not appreciate this kind of weather conditions. The peloton will enjoy a first day of rest on Monday.
