Shortage of staff: Within fifteen years, Switzerland might lack 40,000 nurses
A new study estimates that 5,500 doctors will also be missing by 2040.
The picture painted in a study signed by the consulting firm PwC is gloomy for the future of the health sector in Switzerland. According to its forecasts, relayed by the “NZZ am Sonntag”, 40,000 nurses are expected to be missing in Switzerland in the care sector in 2040 and 5,500 doctor positions will not find takers.
Several causes are put forward such as demographic change, the increase in patients or unattractive conditions. The authors of the study estimate that hospitals will face increased costs that tariffs will not be able to offset. They recommend in particular a “transformation” of the structure of care or even “bold new working models”.
