Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield was having a miserable season before Martin St-Louis arrived behind the bench.
In 30 games, the 21-year-old American had collected only eight points, including only one meager goal, in addition to presenting a differential of -15.
But since taking over from St. Louis, Caufield’s performance has skyrocketed with eight points, including five goals, in just six games. He also showed a +3 differential.
What’s the secret?
“I don’t think I did much, quite honestly,” St. Louis first said following his team’s 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.
“It’s a fresh start and he’s playing loose. He sometimes makes mistakes, yes, but I also made mistakes on the ice. He does a lot more good things than mistakes.
“As a coach, you have to live with mistakes, as long as the right things are there. I was always a player who was trying to reach my coach halfway, I wanted this, but I had to give him this and Cole, he does this.
