Gilles Marchand, general director of the Swiss Broadcasting and Television Company (SSR), will leave his post. A new general management should be operational by early 2025 at the latest. The news was communicated by the SSR on Thursday.

The Board of Directors of the SSR, through its president Jean-Michel Cina and the general director Gilles Marchand, announced Thursday in a press release that a succession process at the head of the SSR would begin soon.

The SSR thus intends to prepare for the political deadlines that await it in 2026 with the “200 francs is enough” initiative and in 2027 with the negotiation of its new concession. A new general management should be operational by early 2025 at the latest.

Early departure

Gilles Marchand should have ended his mandate at the beginning of 2027, at the age of 65. This schedule would have involved a recruitment and succession procedure in 2026, in the middle of the voting period, explains the SSR. In this context, the Board of Directors and the General Director have decided to anticipate this departure in order to put in place new general management to prepare for the mentioned deadlines.

A call for competition will soon be launched, the press release specifies. The process will be led by the personnel committee of the Board of Directors.

Joining SSR in 2001, Gilles Marchand first directed Télévision Suisse Romande (TSR) from 2001 to 2010 before becoming head of Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS), a position he held until 2017. In October 2017, he became the general director of the SSR.
