SSPC: Monthly incidence of femicides fell 35.6% during the López Obrador government

MEXICO CITY.- This Tuesday, during the usual morning press conference of the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorthe secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez.

During her speech, the official said that during President López Obrador’s government, the monthly incidence of femicides fell by 35.6%.

The government recorded 101 femicides, gender-based murders of women, in the first month of López Obrador’s administration, in December 2018, while the figure dropped to 65 crimes last June, three months before the end of the current administration, Rodríguez Velázquez said.

The official attributed the decrease, in part, to policies such as creating the Gender Cabinet to “design and implement public policies on the subject in the area of ​​security.”

This has allowed the implementation of the National Protocol for Police Action for the Attention to Gender Violence against Women in the Family Environmentand the National Protocol for Police Action in Cases of Violence against Women and Femicide.

Rosa Icela Rodríguez also said that the following were created: Networks of Women Peacebuilderswith the participation of 19,000 citizens, and there has been training in care protocols to protect minors and women victims of violence.

The Secretariat of Security It has also “strengthened” the Comprehensive Strategy against Violence against Women and Girls, in which it trained 28,603 officials and 20,731 police officers, in addition to promoting the use of technology to Prevent cybercrime against women.

Despite the figures, there is still work “to be done,” acknowledged Rodríguez Velázquez, who as of October 1, in the next Government, will be the Secretary of the Interiorthe top position in the future president’s cabinet, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

“Misogyny and machismo must be eradicated and a culture of respect for women’s rights must be promoted,” said Rosa Icela Rodríguez.

Among its proposals is standardize the criminal type of femicide in all entities of the country so that in each state it is investigated and prosecuted in the same way.

She also recommended continuing prevention campaigns aimed at families to prevent violence against women and girls, promoting a culture of respect for women’s rights, and continuing the women’s care program.

Sheinbaum Pardo will be the first female president of Mexico as the country faces a wave of sexist violence with a average of 10 women murdered per dayadding femicides and intentional homicides.
