Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference is an old organization, but it seems to be standing with new parties in the elections.

It is noteworthy that BJP, the ruling party at the Centre, has not fielded any candidate from Kashmir on its ticket.

Explaining this move, BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur told Independent Urdu that ‘Not choosing a candidate from Kashmir is part of our nationwide election strategy. We are contesting elections in many places under the DA alliance. Even in Kashmir, like-minded parties will continue to receive our patronage.’

He further said that ‘party based on dynastic rule, be it Congress, National Conference or People’s Democratic Party, to keep them away, we will patronize other political parties under a strategy.’

However, Siddique Wahid, a political analyst who monitors the political activities of the region, has a different opinion on this strategy of the BJP.

Siddiq Wahid told AFP in an interview that ‘I think BJP is not fielding its candidate for a simple reason. The simple reason is that they want to avoid the possible embarrassment of losing.

“It will be the aim of his party that he will try to align with people whose position is closer to his party position and thinking.”

Jammu Kashmir National Conference has chosen Agha Syed Ruhollah Mehdi as its candidate from Srinagar parliamentary constituency.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, he said, ‘These elections are important because these are the first elections following we have finalized our democratic and legal identity.

“They are giving us an opportunity to express our position to the Parliament and people of India that the decision taken on August 5, 2019 is not acceptable to the people of Kashmir.”

He added that ‘the principles on which we joined the country (India) have all been broken.’

On the narrative of Article 370, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Altaf Thakur said, ‘These decisions are taken at the Centre. Even when 370 was repealed, there were still three members of parliament from Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. They might not do anything then, what will they do now?’

Independent Urdu also spoke to some citizens.

Arif Akhon, a young voter of Srinagar, while talking to Independent Urdu, said, “Those who are attacking our identity and recognition, it is necessary for us to send such a candidate to the parliament who will raise his voice.”

Another citizen, Haya Javed, said that when the situation worsened, the National Conference and PDP leaders were detained. Seeing these conditions, he might have understood what people need. And if they come to power, they will take care of the needs of the people.’

The Hurriyat Conference and its affiliated political leaders have always boycotted the parliamentary elections in Kashmir. But this time no prominent Hurriyat leader openly appealed for boycott.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said in a statement to The Hindu newspaper that ‘Indian government has made unilateral changes The Kashmir issue has made it complicated and now calling for an election boycott will be of no use.
