El presidente de Square Enix, Yosuke Matsudathrough a recent interview called on Japanese developers not to imitate Western ones.
In a conversation with Yahoo Japan, the CEO of Square Enix pointed out that for the Japanese video game market to remain, it must not copy the rest. “Today the market is globalized. The Japanese market used to be big, but today it is behind China and the United States.. So if you’re not recognizable, you’re not in business,” she pointed out.
As he elaborated, “if japanese developers try to imitate western games they don’t make good games”, pointing out that “the design of the monsters, the audiovisual effects… are very Japanese things. And gamers all over the world know what makes Japanese games good.”
This is how Matsuda finally points out that “international markets are important, but not enough to develop just for them”, adding that Square Enix diversifies its catalog, and has the support of Western studios for the development of some games, such as Tomb Raider.
