New Paltz, N.Y. – February 14, 2024 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team produced a four-set win at rival New Paltz on Wednesday by the set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19.
Springfield, which was ranked fourth in the most recent AVCA/NVA Division III National Poll, won for the 10th-straight outing to improve to 10-1 on the season. New Paltz, which was among those teams receiving votes in the national poll, evened its record at 6-6.
Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) produced 15 kills at a .545 clip on the pin, while Sam Levinson (La Grange, Ill.) added 14 kills and eight digs. Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) directed Springfield’s offense to a .347 hitting percentage with 42 assists and Ethan Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied 10 kills, five digs, and three aces.
In the opening set, Springfield used a 4-2 push capped off a huge swing down the line in transition by Levinson to force the hosts into a timeout at 10-6. An ace from Costley extended the lead to 17-12 and Springfield was poised to ease to a first-set victory following a Hawk attack error at 22-17. However, New Paltz answered with a 4-0 push as the Pride burned both of its timeouts. Springfield would respond to earn set point on an ace by Mulvaney before the Hawks eighth service error allowed the Pride to earn a 25-23 win behind four kills from Levinson.
Even at 6-6 in the second, Springfield scored the next three points to take a lead it would not relinquish. After the Hawks got within 20-18, the Pride would once more use a three-point burst to gain some breathing room as it pulled away from the 25-20 victory as a New Paltz service error once more ended the stanza.
In the third, the teams were knotted up a total of 16 times as the frame featured six lead changes. A kill from Costley would tie the frame for the final time at 23, before a sideout kill from the Hawks and attack error allowed the hosts to escape with a 25-23 win.
Springfield’s offense came alive in the fourth as it racked up 17 kills at a .364, highlighted by eight kills off the arm of Costley. Tied up at 10 apiece, a kill from Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) jumpstarted a 6-1 scoring run which featured four kills by Costley. New Paltz would call for timeout at 18-14 following another Costley kill and Walters sealed the four-set win with the Pride’s 11th service ace of the evening for the 25-19 win.
On Saturday, Springfield will host a tri-match with Rivier and St. Joseph’s beginning at 3 pm.
