The relative numbers expected for the two bridges are less dazzling than those of the recent past. In 2023, once more according to Federalberghi, around 17 million Italians said they were ready to leave, triggering a turnover of 7.4 billion. This year, 45.7% of those who give up the bridge will do so mainly for economic reasons for April 25th and 45.0% for May 1st. Others, around 21%, will not leave for family reasons.
Expenditure items and goals
According to the Federalberghi Observatory, the holiday for the Liberation Bridge will be just over 4 days with a per capita expense of 439 euros for those who remain in Italy which becomes 588 euros for those who go across the border. 28% of the budget will be spent on meals, travel and accommodation will absorb 23.9% and 22.7% while 11.6% of the budget will be allocated to shopping. The budget for the May 1st long weekend is more limited with an average expense per person of 379 euros. In one case in two they will stay in a hotel while almost a quarter will be hosted by relatives and friends.
Over 17 million people, according to Trenitalia, will choose the train for their travel with a 2.5% increase in bookings. The hot destinations are the cities of art but also the smaller villages reachable by regional trains. Pompeii and the Royal Palace of Caserta, Cortona, Montepulciano and San Gimignano, Urbino, Fermo and Pesaro in the Marche region stand out; Narni, Spoleto, Orvieto and Assisi in Umbria; Ostuni, Molfetta, Polignano a Mare and Lecce in Puglia; Taormina and Syracuse in Sicily while La Spezia is the terminus to reach the Cinque Terre.
As for destinations in Italy, the most booked cities in the two weeks between 22 April and 5 May 2024, this time according to Trainline forecasts, a train and coach travel booking platform, stand out: Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna and Florence while foreign destinations include Nice, Paris, Vienna, Lugano and Innsbruck. In general, coastal locations such as Nice, Ventimiglia, Naples and Salerno are preferred, with the two Campania cities on the rise. According to Trainline data, bookings to reach Bolzano, Ferrara, Turin and Genoa are on the rise.
