The weather is conducive to thorough cleaning, which is why the City Purification Authority is already commissioning a number of works that use water. Not only streets and pavements are wet cleaned, but also sheds, bins and underground passages.

The season and positive air temperatures around the clock enable cleaning with water. Those suspended during the winter, when due to low air temperatures, water is not used, return to the catalog of cleaning works. From spring to autumn, the City Cleaning Authority (ZOM) will regularly clean streets, tracks, pavements, stops, shelters, bins and underground passages.
The effect of a clean city consists of a number of detailed and systematic cleaning works. Our work is not only regarding the aesthetic value of public space, but also regarding the everyday comfort of the inhabitants of the capital. We know that cleanness is important for Varsovians and that they appreciate the work of the cleaning services – says Tadeusz Jaszczołt, director of the City Cleaning Authority.
Scrubber on the sidewalks
Cleaning pavements and bus shelters with the use of water is carried out with the use of scrubber dryers and pressure washers. The City Cleanup Authority has already cleaned the pavements along Krakowskie Przedmieście, Nowy Świat, Świętokrzyska and at Plac Piię Rogów. These are one of the most popular and representative places in the capital, which is why ZOM supports the managers responsible for keeping these areas clean. Other things to wash include: tram stops and the terminus at the Central Railway Station. This year, these areas will be washed many times.
Comprehensive cleaning covers bus and tram stops. There are over 1,200 shelters for washing with water under pressure, including glass walls and roofs, as well as posts, display cases with timetables and benches. Such cleaning will be repeated this year 4 times, and in places where there are the most passengers, even 8 times. Works are carried out – for the safety and comfort of travelers – at night.
Fight once morest vandalism
Assuming that pseudo-graffiti is not art but vandalism, ZOM cleans dirty bins. To effectively wash the rough, concrete structure of the bin, pressurized water and special preparations are used to remove traces of paints and sprays. These works will be carried out by the City Cleansing Authority until the end of autumn and may eventually cover up to 1,000 containers. Washing baskets are indicated by ZOM controllers who monitor the city for cleanliness every day. Residents can also report disfigured containers by providing their locations through the Municipal Contact Center Warsaw 19115.
ZOM takes care of cleanliness also underground – it regularly wet cleans 14 underground passages, e.g. at the monument to the sapper, the roundregarding of Siberian exiles, the Cytadela or the Marymont metro station. First, the walkway in the aisle is swept and then washed with pressurized water. In this way, the stairs and railings are also cleaned, and in the case of the passage near the Copernicus Science Centre, also the glass roofs of the entrances. Washing also applies to passages in the towers of the Poniatowski Bridge.
Sweepers and dishwashers in action
After the end of cleaning the streets following winter, the City Cleaning Authority will regularly wet clean 1,300 km of roadways and hardened tram tracks until autumn. Every week, 30 sweepers and dishwashers carry out the work. Water is used already during sweeping, thanks to which the raising of dust is limited. Cleaning on the roadways will be repeated 34 times, and on the tracks 80 times. Due to the low speed of cleaning service vehicles, the works are carried out at night – for this reason, there is an increased noise level in the cleaning area from time to time.
This year, as in previous years, the City Cleansing Authority plans to use water from municipal swimming pools for cleaning. The water, instead of going to the sewage system, is used for cleaning. In 2022, 7 municipal sports centers donated a total of 1.6 million liters of water, with which ZOM washed the streets and tracks.
