In 2022, on the occasion of the festival Spotlight Charlie Parker, 24 events were held across Kansas City. Each year, this initiative celebrates the genius of jazzman Charlie Parker by animating the music scene of the city.

THE concerts and musical performances take place in places of life, such as bars and cafes, in order to help the owners by attracting the public.

A great opportunity

From August 17 to 27, 2023, Raphaël MATHIS, guitarist, and Maxime RÉTIF, pianist and trumpeter, will travel to Kansas City to take part in this great festival.

Aged 16, these two talented students from the Conservatoire are currently in their 2nd cycle at the Jazz department.

Raphaël MATHIS is following a baccalaureate in sciences and techniques of theatre, music and dance (S2TMD) at Lycée Fabert. This course allows him to continue to practice his art intensively in order to become professional.

Music is my whole life. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 5 years old. I always wanted to do music, but I didn’t want to do classical. Once I started jazz, I couldn’t put it down. It’s so different. There is a lot more freedom. It’s free, it’s alive.

Raphael Mathis

This project is particularly close to his heart: the United States is the land of jazzand he plans to live there in the future.

A dream trip

Raphaël and Maxime will have the opportunity to attend concerts, take part in jam sessions (improvisation sessions between musicians) or rehearse with great artists and follow masterclasses led by experts.

And of course, they will be invited to perform at the festival. Solo, in duo or with local musicians, they will have the opportunity to shine on stage.

There is an inherent culture that makes the degree of improvisation and spontaneity second nature. It’s a land of jazz. The approach to the scene is incredible, it is different. Americans love you when you’re on stage. There is not this rupture between stage and public as there is with us.

They will also do tourism in order to discover the history and heritage of Kansas City. On site, they will stay with host families and discover the American way of life.

This trip represents a unique opportunity for the two young musicians of to enrich oneself artistically and culturally. It offers them the opportunity to make a name for themselves and build a valuable network.

A chance for the image of Metz

This trip, free for both students, will essentially be funded by the City of Kansas Cityand a participation of the Eurometropolis of Metz .

It was made possible thanks to a partnership between the cities of Metz and Kansas City, both labeled Creative City UNESCO Music. As a reminder, Metz obtained this label in 2019.

The first contacts were made during a visit by American representatives to Metz, where in addition to falling under the charm of the city of Metz, they showed interest in the jazz dance section of the conservatory.

This promising collaboration paves the way for future musical and artistic exchanges.

THE adventures of Raphaël and Maxime will be documented on the conservatory’s networks. We will be sure to follow them.
