Spotify is testing a new feature that might make it easier for you to listen to songs when you’re away from an internet connection. Dubbed “Your Offline Mix,” the playlist will save “a mix of songs you’ve recently played when the weather’s high, but your connection’s down.” And according to screenshots shared by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek that show roughly three half-hour playlists. Ek hasn’t shared a timeline for when the feature might get more widespread, but since he’s been tweeting publicly regarding testing hopefully it’s not too far away.
The app already allows users to download playlists or albums for offline listening, which is a useful feature for saving data when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, or when you’re completely off the Internet while doing anything from traveling on a plane to taking the subway. , but it can be an annoying manual process of selecting the music to download, especially if you’re someone who likes to flip through a lot of different music.
YouTube Music has had a similar feature called Offline Mixtape for years, and it appears that Spotify has been working on the offline mixtape feature since at least mid-2020 if evidence was discovered at the time by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong (via TechCrunch) who said: Why exactly did the service take this long to launch? But if I had to guess, I’d assume it became less important when the Covid pandemic curtailed the amount of time many people spent outside and away from Wi-Fi.”
And it sounds like your own offline mix might be a nice feature when it comes out, in the meantime, if you’re struggling with choosing which playlists to download for offline listening, I’d suggest downloading the “Your Best Hits” playlist created by Spotify your last year, and you may lack your more recent listening obsessions, but at least you’ll have a good starting point to fall back on when your internet fails.
