Spotify is testing a new feature that might make it easier to listen to songs when you’re away from the Internet. A playlist called Your Offline Mix saves mixes of songs you’ve played recently. There is a lot of air, but you are not connected. And according to screenshots shared by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, which show roughly three half-hour playlists. Ek’s timeline for a broader use of the feature he didn’t share, but since he’s publicly tweeted regarding the experience, hopefully it’s not too far away.
And the app now allows users to download playlists or albums for offline listening, which is a handy data-saving feature for when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, or when you’re completely offline. While doing everything from traveling on a plane to riding the subway, it can be an annoying manual process of selecting music to download, especially if you’re someone who likes to scroll through a lot of different music.
YouTube Music has had a similar feature called Offline Mixtape for years, and Spotify appears to have been working on an offline mixtape feature since at least mid-2020, if evidence is then discovered by app researcher Jin Manchun Wang (via TechCrunch). Why did it take so long to launch this service? But if I had to guess, I think the time a lot of people spend outside and away from Wi-Fi has decreased since the covid pandemic.
And it sounds like your offline mixes would be a nice feature, at the same time, if you’re having trouble choosing playlists to download offline, I’d suggest downloading the Your Best Songs playlist. by Spotify last year, and you might not have your last listening qualms, but at least you’ll have a good starting point to fall back on when the internet goes down.
