Spotify will look more like TikTok with its new design

Spotify has held a big event in Los Angeles with Ed Sheeran, Jennifer Lopez, Karol G and other artists. But instead of focusing on famous artists, Daniel Ek, the company’s founder and CEO, said that Spotify is a place where all creators can establish a career, prosper and grow. And what is the network of creators that all the other networks copy? Well, TikTok, of course.

Spotify has presented a new, more visual and interactive interface, with a vertical feed through which you slide TikTok-style while audio and video clips are playing. These clips are called ‘previews’ and include playlists, albums and podcast episodes customized for each user.

Two of the novelties of the redesign for users son:

  • ‘Smart Shuffle’. A way to include new music to complement the music ofan existing playlist
  • ‘Autoplay’ of podcasts. As with music, Spotify will now offer to autoplay podcasts when an episode ends

And for the creators:

  • Discovery Mode’. A tool to identify new songs
  • ‘Showcase’. Una tarjeta in the new feed startup that will introduce an artist’s music to potential listeners

“Spotify recommendations drive almost half of streams,” said Gustav Söderström, Spotify’s vice president of product. “That’s why new content discoveries on Spotify, unlike many other platforms, offer creators much more than a fleeting moment of fame.”

Video will be the cornerstone of the redesign. The new Spotify will allow you to host video for podcasts bypassing Anchor (which, by the way, is now called Spotify for Podcasters). The interface will be activated as of today for the more than 500 million monthly active users of Spotify.
