Spotify: subscriptions can no longer be paid for via the App Store

Spotify is ending payments through the App Store. If you’re taking advantage of Spotify’s Premium plan, here’s what you need to know.

Spotify has made an important decision: it will no longer be possible to pay for the Premium subscription via the App Store. This measure mainly concerns subscriptions made between 2014 and 2016 via this same Apple Store. And concerns, on an ad hoc basis, certain historical subscribers. Spotify is currently sending out emails notifying affected users of this new policy.

What does this change mean for affected subscribers? At the end of the current billing period, their Spotify account will be switched to the free service with ads. To continue enjoying all the benefits of Spotify Premium, they will need to renew their subscription through the official Spotify website.

A very limited impact

It is important to note that this change will not affect a large number of users. Indeed, Spotify had already stopped new registrations via the App Store several years ago. The primary goal is to avoid paying Apple’s fees. As a reminder, the apple brand charges a 15% commission on payments made via the App Store.

It is unfortunate that the Spotify app does not directly offer the option to upgrade to Premium subscription. However, by going to the Spotify website, subscribers can easily re-subscribe and take full advantage of all the benefits of the Premium version.

Subscribed to Spotify Premium via the App Store? It’s time to go through the official website to continue enjoying your favorite music without interruption.
