Spotify now lets friends share a playlist

O Spotify launched launched today Jama new feature that combines features of collaborative playlists and Blend to allow a group of users to control a play queue, even remotely.

Already available to everyone who has the latest version of the app installed on their devices, Jam differs from the aforementioned features by prioritizing real-time playback.

Actions like adding or removing songs are done following the session starts — not before. It’s basically as if a user’s play queue is temporarily “shared”.

The new feature is quite interesting because it allows, for example, that control over music in a given environment does not depend exclusively on a single person or device, making everything more democratic.

A new Jam can be created exclusively by Premium users, but anyone can join a session. Just tap the “Start a Jam” button for the game to begin.

Automatically, any user who logs into the Spotify app on the same Wi-Fi network where a Jam was started; Therefore, you will receive an alert asking whether you want to join the session or not.

Being able to mirror playback on other devices via Spotify Connect, the host of a Jam can invite friends to a session just by bringing their phones together, via QR code or by sharing an invite link.

By default, all users can add songs to the queue, see who added a particular song and receive recommendations — hence the aforementioned similarity with collaborative playlists and Blend.

The administrator, in turn, can remove a participant or a track and change the order in which the songs play — as well as allow other users to also organize it.

It’s not difficult to compare Jam with SharePlay, an Apple feature that allows you to listen to music, play games and watch videos with other people. Spotify’s solution, however, is vastly more versatile.
