Spotify Introduces AI Playlist Creation Feature
Music streaming giant Spotify is taking its use of artificial intelligence (AI) a step further with the introduction of AI playlists. The new feature allows users to generate personalized playlists based on written prompts. Currently available in beta, the feature will initially be rolled out in the U.K. and Australia, with further improvements and expansions planned for the future.
Spotify’s AI playlists offer more than just the ability to create playlists based on genre or time frame. Users can now request custom playlists based on specific prompts, such as “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.” The prompts can cover a wide range of topics, including places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, or even emojis. To create the personalized AI-generated playlists, Spotify uses large language models (LLMs) to understand the user’s intent. Users can further refine the playlist by issuing commands like “less upbeat” or “more pop.” Unwanted songs can also be removed by swiping left.
Spotify’s AI technology has been developed in collaboration with various third-party tools. The AI playlists feature was initially discovered by reverse engineers in October 2023, while the company confirmed its testing in December of the same year.
The AI playlists feature is accessible in the Spotify app under the “Your Library” tab. A pop-up menu will appear, offering the AI Playlist as a new option alongside the
