Eight new players have been brought to North Jutland.
These are names such as Vincent Müller, Kelvin John, Oumar Diakhité and John Iredale, among others, and seven out of the eight have in common that they have been transfer-free and come to AaB without experience from Danish top football.
In other words, we are talking about what is often called lottery tickets among football fans.
Comprehensive process
It is AaB’s newly appointed sporting director James Gow, who has been involved in bringing in the new players, and he is unsurprisingly finding it difficult with the aforementioned predicate.
– When people don’t think that our purchases have the necessary quality, my answer is that they should watch the games. I’m not worried about whether our new players are good enough for the Super League, says James Gow in the latest edition of North Jutland’s football podcast Ripodsten.
Here he explains the extensive process AaB goes through before they arrive at which players they will try to bring to the club.
– That is why I also think that the word lotto coupon hits the mark. It suggests we haven’t done our due diligence and are just bringing in players. That’s not how it works at all, says James Gow.
Don’t be naive
There is, however, the challenge for the English sporting director that in AaB’s current financial situation he does not have the opportunity to pay a significant transfer nor can he offer a golden salary package.
This makes the job of hitting the mark on the player market quite a bit more challenging, but it is a challenge that James Gow has accepted is part of the job.

– I have to play the cards I have. Of course I would like to have a higher salary and transfer budget, but I don’t feel any envy when I see other clubs spending money.
– I know that studies show that in 80 percent of all cases it is the budget that determines the location. We would be naive if we didn’t acknowledge that. But we have what we have and must make the most of it, says James Gow.
You can hear much more about his views on the job as sporting director and how he looks back on his first year in AaB, in the latest edition of Ripodsten. It can be found where you listen to podcasts.
