The National Games Authority (ANJ) anticipates an increase in sports betting during the 2023 rugby world championship and is launching an awareness campaign.

According to a study conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by the ANJ, 13% of French people intend to bet during this Rugby World Cup.

If rugby “only” occupies 4th place among the most wagered sports in 2022 with 176 million euros in stakes committed, the ANJ estimates that the total stakes “might be in a range from 85 million euros to 150 million euros”.

The course of the French XV might logically determine the amount of the games since 91% of potential bettors plan to bet on the matches of the French team.

Still according to the ANJ, 47% of French people intend to follow the rugby world championships. Which represents a larger total than for the 2022 Football World Cup. Of this total, 45% intend to bet “friendly” with their loved ones and 25% would intend to bet money on the matches. 44% of them are between 25 and 34 years old.

Snapchat to reach young people

“The risks of addiction and dependence associated with sports betting are identified by more than 8 in 10 French people (84%)” alerts the ANJ. Especially since this measurement has increased by 11 points since the last Football World Cup in Qatar.

To raise awareness among young people, the ANJ therefore decided to launch a campaign on the social network Snapchat. Taking up the particular lexicon of rugby, the ANJ explains with well-felt play on words “that you don’t get started if you don’t master the codes”.

Imagined by the Rosbeef agency! which has already collaborated with the ANJ for the 2022 Football World Cup, the campaign will also be broadcast via digital outdoor billboards.
