At the “Wachauer Radtage” in mid-July, the focus is not only on sport but also on the middle school in Gföhl (Krems district). The students designed the start numbers for the almost 2,000 athletes. As a reward, BMX professional Senad Grosic was a guest.

Sporting enthusiasm and artistic talent – these are the qualities with which the schoolchildren from the Waldviertel region convinced the organizers of Lower Austria’s largest mass cycling event. “We wanted to inspire the younger target group for cycling and we succeeded very well in Gföhl. We are enthusiastic regarding the design of our starting numbers,” says project manager Lukas Haizinger.
Annelie Neulinger, Anna Himmetzberger (both eleven years old) and Maximilian Graf (13) designed the starting numbers for the three different competitions that will be held on July 16th. “I wanted to draw the cyclists in connection with the Danube, because they are going through the Wachau,” explains Annelie Neulinger. Her classmate Anna Himmetzberger drew the finish of the race, which will be decided by a mass sprint. “I’ve seen that a few times because you drive dad too,” explains Anna.

Impressive jumps
After the presentation, the students were able to show their talent on two wheels themselves. The Tullner BMX pro Senad Grosic provided the young talents with tips and tricks. “Children are the future and if I can convey the joy of my sport to them, that’s just great,” says Grosic happily. One even ventured down the ramp at high speed and impressed with his jump.

Maximilian Graf listened attentively to Grosic, then plucked up all his courage and jumped his bike over the ramp. “I was very nervous at first, but as soon as you start driving, the palpitations go away. It was really very cool,” said “Maxi” full of euphoria following his debut jump. “You can see that sport promotes creativity and that’s what we exemplify here in our school,” said school director Mario Simlinger, who was happy regarding the success.
