Sport and Ayurveda? Yes, that goes well together. Ayurveda expressly recommends doing sport, but in accordance with your type! What is good for a Kapha person is almost harmful for a Vata person. But the following applies to all three doshas: exercise in the morning is ideal, because Kapha time is from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Active in sports during the Kapha period
In late summer I was in Denmark with Paul. We jogged on the beach every other morning and it was incredibly good for both of us. Kapha time is from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., the ideal time to get some exercise. Exercise during Kapah time helps to reduce sluggishness and start the day with fresh energy.
Getting up early is also good on vacation
Even though we were on vacation and that’s when most people long to sleep in, we got up at 6:30 a.m. every day. For Paul, who is a vata type, there was a very light, small oatmeal muesli beforehand. For me, as a pitta person, two slices of dry crispbread were enough. A Kapha type doesn’t need to eat breakfast anyway. A glass of warm water and/or Lemon honey water is good and important for all dosha types. And then put on your trainers and head to the beach.
Sport for working people
Exercising between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. is a luxury that for most people is only possible on vacation. The vast majority of us who have a normal job with the usual working hours can usually only do sports in the evenings or on weekends. But there is also a solution for this in Ayurveda.
In the evening Kapha time from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m
If you can only exercise during this period, then opt for gentle exercise with Hata Yoga, Tai Chi or Qi Gong. If you feel the need to work out, try to finish it by 8 p.m. You will still need the time followingwards to completely come down physically once more.
On the weekend
Whenever possible, choose to exercise early in the morning on the weekend. Or on your day off. It is incomparably more pleasant to challenge your body in the morning and go through the day with this energy.
Type-appropriate sport – what Ayurveda recommends
Vata is movement
Vata people or people with too much Vata are usually stressed, nervous and overwhelmed anyway. Strangely enough, these people tend to push themselves even harder and take part in a triathlon out of nowhere. Ayurveda focuses on balance and always recommends the opposite of what is currently too dominant. If you are stressed and constantly on alert, try to bring peace and relaxation into your life. Gentle sports and slow movements are just right now. Vata types should only exert a little effort, 15 to 20 minutes is enough. You should hardly sweat.
- Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong
- Walken
- To swim
- Free dancing
Vata people are delicate and yet tend to completely exhaust themselves. That’s why it’s helpful to set a timer so you can stop in time following 15 to 20 minutes. Effort and expenditure increase Vata even more. Heavy sweating and increased breathing increase Vata and exactly the opposite is good. Vata types take good care of themselves when they practice gentle, effortless movements.
Pitta has fire
Pitta types have a lot of fire and energy within them. It stands to reason that Pitta types are ambitious and easily give in to pressure to perform. On the one hand, Pitta people have a lot of energy, which they can also use in sports. On the other hand, Pitta people have to restrain themselves from giving in to an exaggerated idea of achievement. For Pitta types, your breathing can be a little deeper, but you shouldn’t exert yourself for longer than 30 to 40 minutes. In general, it would be good to slow down once more as soon as you start sweating profusely. Heavy sweating is a sure sign that enough has been enough.
- To swim
- surfing
- Ride a bike
- To ski
- Climb
- light jogging and walking
- Ball and team sports
Water sports or winter sports are ideal for hot-tempered Pitta types. Water and snow cool the hot fire. A concrete training plan helps Pitta people so that they don’t overdo it. Under no circumstances should you overdo it and develop unhealthy ambition. This drives up the pitta.
Kapha is strong
Kapha types often have strong joints and good muscles. Kapha types are ideal endurance athletes; their robust bodies can run for long periods and sweat profusely. Kapha types are naturally rounded and soft; they will never look as wiry as a Vata person. But it is precisely this characteristic, heavy and strong, that makes Kapham people ideal for long-distance runners, weight lifters and anything where endurance and strength are important.
- Long distance running
- Strength training
- Dance sport
- any form of endurance training
The Kapha types are welcome to let off steam for an hour and work up a sweat. This stimulates the sluggish metabolism and helps maintain weight.

Morning exercise in everyday life
It’s easy to live a healthy, healthy life on vacation. But in everyday life? We have decided to get up a little earlier on Wednesdays and Saturdays and run first thing in the morning. After 20 minutes at the latest, Paul is in the shower and I go for another run. And then we have a good breakfast! As a Pitta type, I need one nutritious oatmeal. Paul, who has a lot of Vata, is also optimally supplied with a warm breakfast. You can find the recipe for it here warm porridge.
