Independence Primary School students are celebrating a major achievement. Twenty-five out of 28 students who entered a national youth writing competition had their spooky stories selected for publication in “Young Writers USA Scary Tales: The Witching Hour,” an anthology expected to be released in the spring. This success is a testament to the creativity and dedication of these young authors, and also the effective English Language Arts program at Independence Primary School, according to Principal TJ Ebert. “Our students have demonstrated remarkable creativity and discipline by crafting compelling 100-word mini sagas,” he said. “This achievement showcases the exceptional writing talent within our ELA program.”
Looking Ahead: School Facilities Assessment underway
To ensure Independence’s schools remain top-notch learning environments, Independence Local Schools has launched a comprehensive assessment of its facilities. architectural Vision Group (AVG) is leading this initiative, evaluating the condition of the primary school, middle school, and bus garage. Superintendent Kelli Cogan believes this review is a crucial step. “With our new strategic plan being approved by the board next month, this partnership represents a crucial step in determining the best path forward for our school facilities,” she said. “We’re looking forward to working closely with AVG, our parents, and the entire Independence community to develop solutions that will serve our students’ needs for years to come.”
The need for a thorough assessment stems from a 2019 bond issue for improvements which narrowly failed. This comprehensive review, expected to be completed by mid-April, will examine 23 critical building systems, including heating, roofing, electrical systems, security, technology, and structural elements.
The district plans to engage residents throughout this process, encouraging their participation in upcoming community discussions.
Exploring Healthcare Careers
Eighth grade students at Independence Middle School recently had a unique opportunity to explore the diverse world of healthcare thru a speaker series. Alex Reeds from renowned Cleveland Clinic shared their professional journeys and insights, revealing the various roles within the medical field.
“We were thrilled to host these healthcare professionals who took time from their busy schedules to inspire our students,” said Principal Jamie Vanek. “By keeping the groups small, we created an habitat where students could ask questions and truly engage with these experienced professionals.”
The speakers, representing medical laboratory sciences, respiratory therapy, medical coding, and nursing, captivated students with their real-world experiences, offering valuable insights into the diverse career paths available in healthcare. “The interactive sessions gave students valuable insights into the diverse career opportunities within healthcare. Each speaker shared their unique educational and professional journey, providing students with real-world perspectives on what it takes to succeed in the medical field,” noted a statement from the school.
