SPÖ wants change at summer school

The SPÖ calls for the summer school to be expanded to include targeted support for those students who have to take a re-examination. The reduced number of registrations for the project would show that an adjustment of the concept was necessary, said SPÖ education spokeswoman Petra Tanzler to the APA. Around 33,000 children and young people have registered this year, compared to around 39,000 in the past two years. In addition, the SPÖ wants a rapid evaluation.

Currently, the summer school, which takes place in the last two weeks of school, is not explicitly designed to prepare for the final exam. The focus is on project-oriented teaching, which should stand out from the actual everyday school life.

In view of the budgeted costs of EUR 6.6 million per year, the SPÖ is also calling for an early evaluation. According to the answer to a parliamentary question from the SPÖ by Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP), such a measure is planned, but only as part of a long-term study over the survey years 2022 to 2024.

Almost 3,900 teachers have registered for the summer school this year, although not all of them will probably be deployed. The vast majority of them chose financial compensation of around 54 euros per hour as the remuneration model – only six percent chose the alternative variant, which means that they will have to teach one hour less per week in the coming school year as compensation for the summer school assignment.
