Defend democracy once morest anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism
Vienna (OTS/SK) – On the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is celebrated internationally on the day the last survivors of the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau were liberated, Sabine Schatz, SPÖ spokeswoman for the culture of remembrance, states that remembrance is more important today must ever be kept awake: “Even 79 years following the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, it is our task to deal with the atrocities of National Socialism and to draw conclusions from them for our daily actions. We must not allow history to fade,” says the SPÖ MP, also pointing out that right-wing extremist crimes are at a high level in Austria. In addition, since Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel, there has been a blatant increase in anti-Semitic attacks in Austria. ****
“No form of anti-Semitism must be accepted unchallenged, but requires active countermeasures,” says Schatz and calls for consistent implementation of the national strategy once morest anti-Semitism. “We have to tighten things up here if the measures currently taken are not enough!”
The SPÖ MP is concerned regarding the dangerous developments in recent weeks in connection with right-wing extremist identitarians. “We must not allow plans to be made that endanger democracy and involve mass deportations of people,” said Schatz, who also points to the close connections between the FPÖ and its youth organization and the right-wing extremist identitarians. “Inhumane and anti-democratic – the FPÖ blatantly shows where it is ideologically positioned and who its allies are; its youth organization is riddled with deportation fanatics and identitarians. This party is unsustainable as a government partner. Instead of working towards the next coalition with the FPÖ at the federal level, the ÖVP must finally end the state coalitions in Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Salzburg.”
Finally, the SPÖ MP congratulates the organizers of yesterday’s “Defend Democracy” demonstration. “I am pleased that yesterday we sent a strong signal of a robust democracy, a strong civil society and once morest right-wing extremism.” (Conclusion) ff
