SPÖ-EU MP criticizes planned simplifications for new genetic engineering and demands full transparency: “Where there is genetic engineering, it must be clearly visible”
Vienna (OTS / SK) – The EU Commission presented its proposal for a new genetic engineering regulation today. If the Commission has its way, genetically modified plants should in future be divided into two categories. In the future, genetically modified plants in the first category should be treated like conventional breeds and subjected to less stringent tests. “The EU Commission now wants to pretend that genetic engineering is harmless and almost something natural. The genetic engineering lobby might not have wished for more,” criticizes Lower Austrian MEP Günther Sidl, who also wants to take action once morest the new genetic engineering regulation in the environmental committee: “The majority of people in Europe are once morest genetic engineering. The EU Commission must finally take note of this and set up stricter rules instead of handing out gifts to the genetic engineering lobby.”
As the chief negotiator of the European Social Democrats for a Europe free of genetic engineering, Sidl advocates more transparency on the subject of genetic engineering and also calls for clear improvements to the planned regulation in this area. “Where there is genetic engineering, it must be obvious at first glance. Nothing must change regarding that,” emphasizes Sidl, who points to the planned simplifications, according to which genetically modified plants of the first category in processed foods no longer have to be declared. “The EU Commission must finally understand that it is not there for the agricultural industry, but for the people of Europe – and they want healthy food from sustainable agriculture and no hidden genetic engineering.” (close) ls
