SPÖ-Sidl: EU Commission turns a blind eye to glyphosate

SPÖ EU MP criticizes recommendation for further approval for the next ten years and calls for an EU research strategy for ecological pesticide alternatives

St. Pölten (OTS) “The EU Commission apparently does not want to see that everything we put into nature ends up on our plate and therefore in our bodies – and that is exactly where environmental toxins have no place,” criticizes the Lower Austrian SPÖ EU MP Günther Sidl today’s recommendation from the EU Commission for a further extension of the glyphosate approval for the next ten years.

“The EU Commission must finally open its eyes and address the problems caused by the excessive use of environmental toxins such as glyphosate. The quality of our soil and water is on the decline, while the number of cancer cases in Europe continues to rise. “If you know all this, you can’t just turn a blind eye to glyphosate,” says Sidl, who, as a member of the EU Parliament’s Environment Committee, is vehemently committed to an EU research strategy for ecological alternatives to pesticides.

“If we create good alternatives, conventional agriculture can also become an even stronger partner for climate protection. This requires a joint effort across Europe for a new research strategy,” emphasizes Sidl, who also offers new opportunities for farmers through this new approach wants to create: “Our agriculture has always been characterized by small farming structures that think regarding the next generation in everything they do. That’s precisely why we finally need ecological alternatives to the pesticides and environmental toxins that have been used so far. This would give our farmers more opportunities to work in a climate-conscious manner without endangering your profits!”
