Conservatives make pacts with right-wingers at the EU level and move to the right; Only social democracy guarantees a strong, social and democratic Europe; Criticism of Nehammer’s trip to Egypt
Vienna (OTS) – In today’s ORF “press hour”, ÖVP Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg asserted in connection with the upcoming European elections that the ÖVP is the force of the middle. SPÖ-EU leading candidate Andreas Schieder said: “Schallenberg’s statements are unbelievable. Reality shows that the conservatives at the EU level are in common cause with the far-right parties. The EPP has moved further and further to the right in the last two years.” The conservatives have repeatedly made pacts with right-wing parties. Together they pursued a blockade policy that slowed down or completely overturned groundbreaking laws in the climate and social areas. Stopping already negotiated laws at the last minute has unfortunately become common practice. “The conclusion is that the ÖVP is the stirrup holder for the rights. The ÖVP doesn’t seem to be interested in how bad a shift to the right would be for Europe and Austria,” says Schieder.****
“This European election is a directional decision,” continues Schieder. The SPÖ stands for a different, a better Europe. A Europe that takes people’s everyday concerns seriously and enables a better life. “Only social democracy is the guarantee for a strong, social and democratic Europe,” says Schieder.
Schieder also criticizes Nehammer’s trip to Egypt: “Posting photos from this trip alone will not bring a solution to the migration issue.” Here, too, it is clear that the conservatives and right-wingers do not have real solutions for the people in Europe be interested. (End) bad
