SPÖ Ottakring: Deep dismay at the alleged femicide in Ottakring

Vienna (OTS / SPW) – According to police information, a 28-year-old woman was apparently stabbed by a 35-year-old man today. Chairman of the SPÖ Ottakring, member of parliament Christian Oxonitsch and possible women’s chairwoman, district councilor Ruth Manninger are deeply dismayed.

“It is the 13th femicide this year. We are all deeply affected and shocked. Our deepest sympathy goes to the bereaved,” said Manninger and Oxonitsch. The high number of femicides in Austria should prompt all those responsible to finally take action.

The SPÖ women have already called for a comprehensive package of measures in the past. “The first step would be the urgent implementation of the Istanbul Convention – the largest legal instrument in the fight against violence against women,” said Manninger. Among other things, the Istanbul Convention would include a permanent crisis management team involving the police, the judiciary and other experts – as well as the so-called high-risk case conferences, which would close a safety net across the entire federal territory in order to be able to prevent potential violent criminals in advance. “Furthermore, there is an urgent need to increase the human resources of the police, the judiciary and the institutions for the protection of victims and violence,” said the former Ottakringer SPÖ women’s chair. In this context, the SPÖ calls for an increase of 3,000 employees in victim and violence protection. Work with offenders must also be expanded and better funded. “Perpetrator work is victim protection,” emphasizes Oxonitsch.

“We mourn the death of this woman and are deeply shocked,” conclude Manninger and Oxonitsch. (Ending)
