The Artificial Intelligence Act must address the latest developments
Klagenfurt – In recent weeks, artificial intelligence (AI) – especially in the form of the program ChatGPT – has attracted attention with ever new capabilities and possible applications. In the meantime, even many experts and executives from the IT industry are critical of the rapid pace of development and advise slowing down the pace. For SPÖ digitization spokeswoman Petra Oberrauner, it is important that the focus in Austria and the EU is on the user-oriented use of AI: “With all the new application possibilities that arise for artificial intelligence in everyday life and at work, one thing must always be clear: the basic rights of people, the rights of employees and consumers must not be violated by AI applications. Clear rules must be established to protect and strengthen these rights. AI should support people in their activities. It must not work once morest them or even replace them!”
The Artificial Intelligence Act, the first law in the world to regulate AI applications in almost all areas of life, is currently being negotiated in the EU. Oberrauner pleads for the latest developments relating to ChatGPT to be included in the law and for this to be passed quickly: “In this way we limit the risks that can emanate from AI applications and create clear rules for research institutions and companies to exploit the opportunities of AI to use.”
In addition to clear rules, Oberrauner also sees an educational mandate that the government must fulfill: “We can best protect fundamental rights and seize opportunities when as many people as possible from all walks of life have basic digital knowledge. Austria should follow the example of Finland, where the government aims to train at least 1% of the population in digital skills every year Research, innovation and digitization set for April 12, concluded Oberrauner.
