KO Fürst: “ÖVP Interior Minister Karner is making a fool of himself with the ‘voluntary’ work requirement for asylum seekers and is proving once once more that he is not up to the task.”
Eisenstadt (OTS) – March 1, 2024 – Once once more, a grandiose announcement by ÖVP Interior Minister Karner has failed, who announced yesterday that there will be no “compulsory work” for asylum seekers. “This is the next embarrassment for Karner as Interior Minister and also for the Burgenland ÖVP, which has even submitted a corresponding proposal to the state parliament. This is the next populist fairy tale from the ÖVP in the area of asylum that is bursting,” criticizes SPÖ club chairman Roland Fürst. The discussion regarding compulsory work was a diversionary tactic, because there are currently around 40,000 people entitled to asylum registered with the employment service who might be integrated into the labor market at any time, but the ÖVP-Green federal government is doing nothing of the sort here. “The federal government simply doesn’t have a plan for how targeted labor migration works; despite the shortage of workers, there are no activities whatsoever, something that employers’ associations also criticize,” said Fürst.
30,000 asylum applications once more in 2024?
The jubilant reports from ÖVP Interior Minister Karner regarding the decline in asylum applications in January 2024 were also completely inappropriately criticized by Fürst. “Karner does not say that with 1,983 positive asylum grants in January 2024, the protection rate increased by 47.5% compared to the previous year, which means that Austria is once once more among the leaders in the EU,” criticizes Fürst. And the number of asylum applications of 2,287 in January 2024 is no reason for Fürst to celebrate. “If the trend continues, then Austria will have at least 30,000 asylum applications by the end of the year, well above the upper limit of 10,000 asylum applications per year that we demand. We will then only provide basic care to 340 people instead of just under 900, the Interior Minister must be aware of that be,” announces Fürst.
