SPÖ women’s leader: “If you don’t do anything for women, you won’t be elected by women”
Vienna (OTS/SK) – “Austria must once once more become a pioneer across Europe when it comes to equality policy. We need a new start in women’s policy and the implementation of half half in all areas of society,” demands SPÖ women’s leader Eva-Maria Holzleitner on the occasion of the demands of the Austrian Women’s Ring published today. According to the World Economic Forum’s Gender Equality Index, Austria fell 26 places last year to 47th out of 146. Iceland, Norway and Finland – countries where active gender equality policies are pursued – lead the ranking. “Half half would be realistic if the Austrian federal government would finally implement the EU wage transparency directive with penalties for underpayment and measures for a fairer distribution of unpaid and paid work,” said Holzleitner. She supports the demands of the Austrian Women’s Ring. ****
It is to be welcomed that the women’s budget has been slightly increased, but it is regrettable that there is no strategy or plan as to how this budget will eliminate the disadvantages faced by women in everyday life. It is also questionable where the 4.5 billion euros announced by the government are for children’s education. “The legal right to a free, all-day children’s education place in particular would be an essential step in promoting women’s employment,” says Holzleitner, who in this context criticizes the low childcare rate for children under three. In Austria this is only 32.1 percent. The EU-wide target is now 45 percent. In view of the super election year 2024, SPÖ women’s leader Eva-Maria Holzleitner is certain: “If you don’t do anything for women, women won’t get elected.” (End) rm/bj
