SPÖ earthquake in Lower Austria: Franz Schnabl leaves, AMS boss takes over the party

The decision has been made: Franz Schnabel is no longer head of the SPÖ Lower Austria, the 64-year-old announced his resignation following the meeting of the party executive on Monday evening.

“It needs a new start, a chance for the party. The decision in the state party executive was unanimous in favor of Sven Hergovich,” emphasizes Schnabl. It takes a lot of courage to take responsibility in such a situation.

After Schnabl’s statement, Hergovich also said: “I would like to thank the party for the trust.” He would also lead the SPÖ into the negotiations in a possible coalition.

Udo Landbauer as governor?

“I will speak to all factions, but it is clear that we will not elect Udo Landbauer as governor.” He will also step down as head of the AMS Lower Austria and move into the state government.

What issues does Hergovich want to sharpen on? “I’m convinced that we have to do more to protect the environment,” says Hergovich.

In mid-February, the new party leader announced that he would move into an apartment in St. Pölten with his girlfriend.
